The Profile Extrusion Process Explained
Profile extrusion is the process of forming a continuous shape of plastic through extrusion. This process does not include forming sheet or film products. Plastic products produced by extrusion of profiles can be solid (such as vinyl wall panels) or hollow (such as straws).
The extrusion process of profiles is similar to other extrusion methods until the introduction of molds. Firstly, the plastic raw materials are fed into the hopper and extruder. A rotating screw causes plastic resin to plasticize and move in a heated barrel, and the heated screw is set to a specific melting temperature. Once the resin melts, mixes, and filters, the plastic will be fed into the extrusion mold. The mold will be placed in cold water to cure the product. Finally, the mold will be moved to the extraction roller, where the final product will be removed from the mold.
How Profile Extrusion Differs From Sheet Extrusion
In addition to profile extrusion, there are two other extrusion methods worth noting: sheet/film extrusion and blown film extrusion.
Sheet extrusion is the process of forming plastic sheets or films. Unlike placing the extrusion mold in cold water like profile extrusion, the material is cooled by a set of cooling rollers. These rollers also determine the thickness and surface texture of the sheet metal. Sheet extrusion usually precedes the hot forming process, which heats the plastic sheet until it is soft enough to form complex shapes.
