Polycarbonate (PC),as polycarbonate light diffuser material used,also a molecule in general engineering plastics, has excellent properties. It is as transparent as glass, but half as light as glass, and cannot even penetrate bullets. In addition, it is heat-resistant and cold resistant, and can be used in the temperature range of -100 ℃ to 140 ℃. It has excellent electrical properties, low water absorption, corrosion resistance, and both softness and strong toughness. So, what is the reason why PC has become a star among polycarbonate light diffuser?

 

 

Let’s just look at the data. In 2005, China’s PC consumption reached 622000 tons, while at that time, China’s production was only a meager 24000 tons, and the import volume was as high as 730800 tons. By 2010, demand had increased to 1.18 million tons, with a compound growth rate of 13.7% over the past five years. During the same period, China’s GDP growth rate was 11.2%, which was 2.5 percentage points higher than GDP. During the 12th Five Year Plan period, PC continued to maintain a good growth momentum. By 2015, the demand reached 1.655 million tons, and the import volume reached 1.427 million tons, which was basically twice that of ten years ago. But at this point, the growth rate of PC demand is already slowing down, with a 5-year compound growth rate of 7%, slightly lower than the 7.8% GDP growth rate of the same period. As of 2018, China’s PC demand reached 1.937 million tons, with a growth rate of 5.5% from 2015 to 2018. Although the growth rate of demand has once again slowed down, compared to varieties that have already entered the mature stage, this growth rate is still very objective, and the industrial scale of PC has basically crossed the threshold of 2 million tons.

(1) Physicochemical properties: Pure polycarbonate resin is an amorphous, odorless, odorless, non-toxic, and transparent thermoplastic polymer with a relative molecular weight generally ranging from 2000 to 7000, a relative density of 1.18 to 1.20, a glass transition temperature of 140 to 150 ℃, and a melting range of 220 to 230 ℃.

 

 

Polycarbonate light diffuser has a certain degree of chemical corrosion resistance. At room temperature, it will not dissolve or cause performance changes under long-term action of the following chemical reagents: 20% hydrochloric acid, 20% sulfuric acid, 20% nitric acid, 40% hydrofluoric acid, 10% to 100% formic acid, 20% to 100% acetic acid, 10% sodium carbonate aqueous solution, salt aqueous solution, 10% potassium dichromate+10% sulfuric acid composite solution, saturated potassium bromide aqueous solution, 30% hydrogen peroxide, aliphatic hydrocarbons, animal and vegetable oils, lactic acid, oleic acid, soap solution, and most alcohols. However, formic acid and acetic acid have a slight corrosive effect on it.

 

 

Polycarbonate light diffuser has excellent oil resistance. After soaking in natural gasoline for 3 months or lubricating oil at 125 ℃ for 3 months, the size and quality of the product remain basically unchanged. Of course, after soaking in high volatile gasoline at room temperature for one month, its surface will be slightly corroded.
