Which is a good transparent plastic? When the “plastic personage” was asked this question, everyone’s reaction must be PMMA. There is no plastic with higher transparency than PMMA, but “why can’t it be PC or PS?” Is the difference in transparency of plastics only determined by the content of impurities in the material?

1. Raw material drying

The drying of raw materials is very important to the quality of products. Too much moisture is likely to cause PC degradation at high temperatures, which will affect the performance of products. Attention must be paid before injection molding!

1.1 Selection of drying equipment

Desiccant dryer is recommended. Compared with box type and hopper type dryers, the dehumidifier dryer not only has a good drying effect, but also can shorten the drying time and improve the efficiency. In addition, the equipment must be cleaned before use to avoid contamination due to impurities.

The recommended drying conditions are as follows:

PMMA: drying condition (temperature/time) 80 ~ 90 ℃/4 ~ 6h, water content control (%) – ≤ 0.03.

PC; Drying conditions (temperature/time): 100 ~ 110 ℃/4 ~ 6h, moisture content control (%) – ≤ 0.02.

2. Forming process

The recommended forming process is as follows:

PMMA: processing temperature 240 ℃ – 260 ℃, injection pressure (injection speed) – high pressure medium speed, glue injection residue – 5-10mm, back pressure – 0.3-0.8Mpa, mold temperature – 70-110 ℃.

PC: processing temperature 270 ℃ – 300 ℃, injection pressure (injection speed) – high pressure medium speed, glue injection residue – 5-10mm, back pressure – 0.3-0.8Mpa, mold temperature – 70-110 ℃.

3. Selection of injection molding equipment

Appropriate specifications shall be selected to ensure the product quality. The following aspects can be considered when selecting:

3.1 Clamping force

The clamping force is an important and commonly used parameter to define the size of the machine.

4. Mold

Mold design is a prerequisite for manufacturing high-quality products. The quality of mold design is also directly related to the cost structure of products.

4.1 Cavity cleaning

Before injection molding, ensure that the mold cavity is clean. During injection molding, mould rust inhibitor and release agent should be used with caution, because they contain a large number of volatile components, which will not be removed completely, thus affecting the quality of the final product.
