The process parameters of extrusion molding mainly include temperature, pressure, extrusion speed, and traction speed

 

 

(1) Temperature is one of the important conditions for the smooth extrusion process. Temperature mainly refers to the temperature of the plastic melt, which largely depends on the temperature of the barrel and screw. Because the heat of plastic melt is mostly provided by the heater outside the barrel, in addition to a portion of the friction heat generated during mixing in the barrel, the barrel temperature is often used to approximate the molding temperature in actual production.

 

(2) During the extrusion process, due to the resistance of the material flow, changes in the depth of the screw groove, as well as obstacles caused by the filter screen, filter plate, and die, a certain amount of pressure is generated inside the plastic along the axis of the material barrel. This pressure is one of the important conditions for plastic to be formed into plastic parts. Increasing the head pressure can improve the mixing uniformity and stability of the extruded melt, and increase the density of the product. But if the head pressure is too high, it will affect production.

 

(3) The extrusion speed is the mass of plastic extruded per unit time (in kg/h) or the length of the plastic part (in m/min). The magnitude of extrusion speed represents the level of production capacity.

 

There are many factors that affect the extrusion speed, such as the structure of the machine head, screw and barrel, the speed of the screw, the structure of the heating and cooling system, and the characteristics of the plastic. When the structure of the extruder, the type of plastic and the type of plastic parts have been determined, the extrusion speed is only related to the screw speed. Therefore, adjusting the screw speed is the main measure to control the extrusion speed.

 

(4) Traction speed, extrusion molding produces continuous plastic parts, therefore a traction device must be installed. Different plastic parts have different traction speeds. Usually, the traction speed of thin films and monofilaments can be faster, because the traction speed is high, the thickness and diameter of plastic parts decrease, and the longitudinal fracture strength increases.

 

For extruded hard plastic parts, the traction speed should not be large. Usually, the traction speed is equivalent to the extrusion speed or slightly higher than the extrusion speed. The ratio of traction speed to extrusion speed is called traction ratio, and its value must be greater than or equal to 1.
