How to achieve polycarbonate PC flame retardant and transparent?

 

PC is an amorphous polymer with extremely high transparency and a transmittance of up to 89%, which can meet many applications with high optical and color requirements. Moreover, it has a certain flame retardant effect and can reach V-2 level flame retardancy. It is a self-extinguishing engineering plastic.

However, in some application scenarios, it is necessary to achieve a V-0 flame retardant rating of 1.6mm or even 0.8mm, such as in electronic products such as mobile phone cases, PC films, PC sheets, and other fields, and to maintain the transparency of the PC, which poses certain difficulties!

 

At present, flame retardants for PC mainly include phosphate esters, organic silicones, and sulfonates. Phosphate ester flame retardants (such as BDP, RDP) need to be added in large amounts to flame retardant PC and are prone to dripping. Therefore, anti dripping agents need to be added, which can seriously affect the transparency of PC. The main flame retardants that can maintain high transparency of PC are sulfonates and organosilicon flame retardants.
