Like injection molding, plastic extrusion is one of the most widely used manufacturing processes for plastic molding and also one of the most widely used manufacturing processes for thermoplastic materials. It is used to create objects with continuous contours, such as pipes, barrels, and door contours.

The current situation of thermoplastic extrusion has existed for nearly a century, but it is still a powerful tool for mass production of continuous profile parts. Customers collaborate with plastic extrusion companies to create customized plastic extrusions for parts.

Plastic extrusion process

It is useful to understand the plastic extrusion process and understand what an extruder is and its working principle. Typically, an extruder includes the following components:

A hopper, a place to store raw plastic materials

Feed inlet, plastic enters the barrel from the hopper

A heated barrel containing a screw driven by a screw driven motor that pushes the material towards the feed pipe

Crushing plate, equipped with a filter screen to filter the material and maintain pressure

Feed pipe, where the melted material flows out of the barrel and is transported to the mold

A mold that shapes the material into the required extruded profiles

Independent cooling system helps to evenly solidify the extruded parts

The plastic extrusion process first fills the hopper with solid raw materials, such as particles or sheets. The material is gravity fed through the feed throat and enters the extruder barrel.

 

Once the material enters the barrel, it begins to heat through three or more heating zones. When it is heated, the material is simultaneously pushed towards the mold end of the barrel by a reciprocating screw, which drives a motor. The screw and pressure also generate heat, so the heating zone itself does not need to be as hot as the required extrusion temperature.

Molten plastic leaves the barrel through a sieve reinforced by a crushing plate. This sieve can remove pollutants from the material and maintain uniform pressure inside the barrel. The material enters the customized mold through the feed pipe, which has been processed with an opening shaped similar to the desired extrusion profile to generate customized plastic extrusion.

When forced through the mold, the material takes on the shape of the mold opening, thus completing the extrusion process. Once completely through the mold, the extruded profile will be cooled in a water bath or through a set of cooling rollers to cure.

 

Extruded plastic

Plastic extrusion is suitable for many different types of thermoplastic materials. These materials are heated to a temperature sufficient to melt the material but not high enough to cause thermal decomposition. This temperature varies from one type of extruded plastic to another.

Extruded plastic is usually fed into an extruder in the form of plastic particles, similar to those used for injection molding. Other forms include powder, flakes, and particles.

Common extruded plastics include:

Polyethylene (polyethylene): extruded between 400 ° C (low density) and 600 ° C (high density)

Polystyrene:~450 ° C

Nylon: 450 ° C to 520 ° C

Polypropylene:~450 ° C

PVC: between 350 ° C and 380 ° C
