May 16, SABIC, a global diversified chemical enterprise, launched a new LNP ™ ELCRIN ™ Wf0061biq resin, a new material, takes marine waste PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles as raw materials and is upgraded and reconstituted into PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) resin through chemical methods. Marine plastics refer to plastic wastes that are not effectively managed within 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the coastline, and they are likely to eventually enter the ocean.

As the latest member of SABIC LNP elcrin IQ chemical upgrading renewable material family, this brand product helps to support the circular economy and can be used as a potential substitute for the original PBT resin. LNP elcrin wf0061biq resin is also expected to be used in consumer electronics applications, such as fan housings, electrical connectors and housings of computers and car seats.

Sanjay Mishra, general manager of R & D and technology of SABIC special materials department, said: “We are constantly enriching the product line of LNP elcrin IQ. At the same time, we are also actively recycling the pet waste used to produce these materials. We hope to ‘Save’ more plastics from the ocean and help our customers add recycled materials to their products to achieve their carbon neutralization goal, while meeting the increasingly urgent needs of consumers for sustainability. In the next 10 years, we expect 10 billion plastic bottles to be upgraded and cause performance problems Stronger durable materials create more value for customers.

SABIC is committed to working with the entire plastic supply chain to find new solutions to increasingly urgent environmental problems, including reducing marine plastic waste and helping to achieve net zero carbon emissions. “

Excellent performance, help circular economy

The brand-new LNP elcrin wf0061biq is a glass fiber reinforced PBT material with bromine and chlorine free flame retardant characteristics, which meets UL94 V0 (0.8mm thickness) and F1 flame retardant standards. It also has excellent heat resistance, toughness and stiffness, and its high fluidity also makes it an ideal material for outdoor thin-wall forming applications such as electrical equipment shells.

All LNP elcrin IQ materials can be used as potential substitutes for traditional PBT to help manufacturers improve the sustainability of end products. SABIC’s proprietary chemical upgrading technology can repolymerize marine pet waste into PBT materials comparable to original materials. This process goes beyond the traditional mechanical recovery process in terms of product quality and performance consistency.

Darpan Parikh, head of Americas business of SABIC special materials department, said: “An internal life cycle analysis according to ISO 14040 / 14044 shows that LNP elcrin wf0061biq modified material can reduce its carbon footprint by 14% and its cumulative energy demand is expected to be reduced by 25% compared with glass fiber reinforced primary PBT. Using our resin to replace the primary material, customers can reduce the impact on the environment by reusing plastic waste and eliminating halogen additives.”
