Polycarbonate (PC) is a kind of engineering plastics with excellent performance and wide application. PC is an amorphous polymer with high transparency and transmittance of 89%, which can meet many application scenarios with high requirements for optics and color. Moreover, it has certain flame retardant effect and can reach V-2 flame retardant. It is a self extinguishing engineering plastic.
However, in some application scenarios, V-0 flame retardance of 1.6mm or even 0.8mm is required, such as mobile phone cases and other electronic products, PC films, PC plates and other fields, and it is difficult to maintain the transparency of PC!
At present, the flame retardants for PC mainly include phosphates, organosilicon and sulfonates. Phosphate flame retardants (such as BDP and RDP) need to be added in a large amount to flame retardant PC, and it is easy to drip. Anti drip agents need to be added, which will seriously affect the transparency of PC. Sulfonic acid salts and organosilicon flame retardants can keep the high transparency of PC.
1、 Sulfonate flame retardant
Sulfonate flame retardant belongs to alkaline earth metal salt, which has high flame retardant efficiency for PC products. The commonly used varieties are mainly sodium 2,4,5-trichlorobenzenesulfonate (STB), potassium benzenesulfonate (KSS) and potassium perfluorobutylsulfonate (ppfbs). STB contains chlorine element and is mainly used in non transparent PC system.
Flame retardant mechanism of sulfonate flame retardant: sulfonate will degrade at 300-500 ℃ to produce SO2 gas that can promote PC crosslinking and char formation. This temperature range matches the degradation temperature of PC. this char formation and crosslinking is mainly realized by promoting the isomerization and fries rearrangement of PC.
1. Potassium benzenesulphonate (KSS)
KSS is widely used. Adding 0.05% – 0.1% can increase the oxygen index of PC from 27% to about 37%, without affecting the transparency of PC. However, the flame retardancy of thin-walled parts (thickness ≤ 2.5mm) cannot reach UL94 V-0 level when used alone. In practical application, it is often compounded with polysiloxane. If a small amount of fluoropolymer is added at the same time, the flame retardancy of the material will be better.
2. Potassium perfluorobutylsulfonate (PFBs)
Adding 0.06% – 0.1% PFBs to PC can make PC reach UL94 V-0 (3.2mm), but it is still difficult to reach V-0 level of 1.6mm or 0.8mm. In order to meet higher flame retardant requirements, a small amount of siloxane can usually be added for compounding. When the amount of siloxane is 0.02% – 0.3% of the total formulation, the flame retardancy of 1.6mm thick spline can reach UL-94 V-0. It should be noted that if the amount of PFBs exceeds 0.1%, it will not only not improve the flame retardant performance of PC, but also affect the transparency of PC.
Compared with PFBs, KSS can make PC have higher transparency, but its flame retardant efficiency is lower. Moreover, the addition amount of KSS and PFBs is not linear with the flame retardant effect. It is not that the more added, the better the flame retardant effect.
At present, the price of imported products of potassium perfluorobutylsulfonate can reach more than 1000 yuan / kg, and the price of domestic products is generally less than 500 yuan / kg. The main quality difference is the stability of the products. Foreign suppliers mainly include Mitsubishi, 3M and other enterprises, while nearly 30 domestic enterprises produce this product.
